2) More web product design talent. This is the scarcest talent of all (more so than engineering). NYC has perhaps the best design community in the world, but most of the designers are trained in non-web design fields (e.g. print design).

I both agree and disagree with this. I don’t think there is any shortage of web product design talent; the said designers need to realize, however, that they must be assertive with their visions and beliefs in order to do good work. This means saying ‘no’ a lot more than ‘yes’ to business people, and really respecting and engaging with developers.

The problem is not that there is a dearth of design talent, but a glut of ‘idea people’ who are great at spewing impressive sounding blather for investors. Of course this is the case though, it’s New York.
